Marketing & strategy
Find the right marketing strategy agency.
A strategy agency helps you decide where to spend your time and money before you spend it. The right one will ask hard questions about your customers, your margins and your goals — and give you a plan your team can actually follow.

What a marketing strategy agency does
Strategy work sits above individual channels. A good strategy agency looks at who your customers are, why they buy, what your competitors offer and where you can realistically win. The output is usually a written plan: positioning, target audiences, key messages, the channels worth investing in and how you'll measure progress.
Some agencies stop at the plan. Others stay on as an outsourced marketing team, running or coordinating the work across channels.
Common ways to work together
- A one-off strategy project. A defined piece of work over a few weeks, ending in a plan and a presentation.
- Workshops. Shorter sessions to align your leadership team on direction and priorities.
- Fractional or outsourced marketing. An ongoing retainer where the agency acts as your marketing lead, often managing other suppliers.
Budget considerations
Strategy is usually priced by the time it takes, so the scope matters more than the label. A plan for a single product in one market is a different job from a brand-wide strategy across several audiences. Ask what's included, how many rounds of feedback you get and whether implementation support is part of the price.
Questions to ask
- Who will do the thinking, and will they be in the room with us?
- Can you show a strategy you wrote and what happened after it was delivered?
- How will we know if the plan is working?
- Do you also sell the services you're likely to recommend?
Red flags
Be wary of a strategy that recommends exactly the services the agency happens to sell, with no reasoning. Be cautious, too, of plans built on templates rather than on your customers, and of anyone who can't explain how success will be measured.

Common questions.
Do I need a strategy before hiring other agencies?
Not always. If you already know your audience and your main channel, you can go straight to a specialist. If you are unsure where to start, or your marketing feels scattered, a short strategy project can save money later.
Can a strategy agency run the marketing too?
Many can. Some work as an outsourced marketing team on a retainer. Tell us in your brief whether you want a plan, ongoing help, or both.
How long does a strategy project take?
It depends on the scope and how quickly your team can share information and give feedback. Ask each agency for a timeline based on your specific brief.
